SPEAKERS /

Joanna Makowska, PhD

Dr. Joanna Makowska obtained her B.Sc. in biology and psychology from McGill University in Montreal.
A year later she moved to Vancouver to pursue graduate work at the UBC Animal Welfare Program. For
her PhD, Joanna investigated the welfare consequences of housing rats in standard laboratory cages versus semi-naturalistic environments where they could perform a variety of natural behaviours, such as
burrowing and climbing. Joanna is currently a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at UBC. Her research goals are to deepen our understanding of what rats need and how best to provide them with a life worth
living.
